When to hire a developer for your Lovable, Replit or Bolt app
Keep building with Lovable, Replit or Bolt while you’re still working out what your app should do and look like. Hire a developer when real people’s data is about to go into it, when each new prompt breaks something else, or when the app needs logins, payments or things that happen while nobody has it open.
What the prototype is for
A vibe-coded prototype is the quickest way to settle what your app does: every screen, every flow and every rule. That’s worth doing yourself, with the AI tool, before you pay anyone.
Working out exactly what an app should do and look like is usually about a third of the effort of building it. A finished prototype has done that part. It becomes the specification a developer builds from.
Signs it’s time to hire a developer
Real people’s data is about to go in. Customers, staff, payments or anything private. Before that, the app needs proper logins and permissions on a server. A data leak can’t be undone.
Each new prompt breaks something else. Fixing one screen breaks another.
A second person can’t see the first person’s data. A prototype that keeps its data in the browser looks finished, until someone opens it on another phone and finds it empty. It needs a real database behind an API.
It needs logins and different roles. For example, a manager who assigns the work and staff who see only their own jobs.
Something has to happen while nobody has it open. Reminders, emails, text messages and nightly jobs run on a server, not in someone’s browser.
It takes payments. The payment is confirmed on a server before anything is unlocked.
The screens talk straight to the database. If the AI connected the frontend to Supabase with a key in the browser, the app needs an API between them before it’s safe for real users. See security review of an AI-built Supabase app.
It needs to be on phones as an app. iPhone and Android apps need a backend, store accounts and store review.
What a developer does with it
I usually rebuild the app rather than patch the prototype, in a cleaner, more modular shape, so new features stop breaking old ones. The prototype shows exactly what to build.
What gets added is listed in making a Lovable, Replit or Bolt app production ready, and the backend in turning a vibe-coded prototype into an app with logins and a backend.
FAQ
Is it too early to talk to a developer? Not if real people will use it soon.
Should I finish the prototype first? It doesn’t need to be finished. It needs to show what the app does. Anything it doesn’t show yet is worked out during the build.
Does it matter which AI tool I used? No. The signs are the same for Lovable, Replit, Bolt or any other tool.
Not sure if your app is at that point?
Send me a link to it and a few lines on what it's for and who will use it.
