Why your vibe-coded prototype loses its data
A vibe-coded prototype usually loses its data because it keeps the data in the browser, on one device. Clear the browser, switch to your phone, or ask a colleague to look, and the data isn’t there. The fix is a real database behind a server, with logins. Even with a real database, who can see and change the data matters just as much, and needs a professional to check it.
Where the data actually is
Some prototypes, especially a single page made with ChatGPT, save their data in the browser’s own storage. It works well in a demo. But that storage belongs to one browser on one device. Apps built in Lovable, Replit or Bolt often save to a real database instead, which brings its own problem, below.
Signs the data is in the browser
- The data disappears after clearing the browser, or in a private window.
- It isn’t on your phone, though you entered it on your laptop.
- A colleague opens the app and sees none of your data.
- The app works with the internet switched off.
The fix: a database behind a server
The data moves to a database on a server. The app asks the server for it, and saves to it. Everyone sees the same data, on any device, and it’s backed up.
That also means logins: the server has to know who’s asking, and show each person only what they’re allowed to see. See turn a vibe-coded prototype into an app with logins and a backend.
Even with a real database, the data needs protecting
Apps built in Lovable, Replit or Bolt often save to a real database, such as Supabase. The data survives, but that’s only half of it. Who can see each record, change it or delete it matters just as much: data security and access control.
It’s easy to get wrong, and it doesn’t show in a demo. Many AI app builders save straight from the browser, with the database key inside the app where anyone can find it. One missing rule can let one customer see another’s data.
Before real customers’ data goes in, have a professional developer look over it. See a security audit for your vibe-coded app.
FAQ
Can I keep the data I’ve already entered? Often, yes. It can be exported from the browser and loaded into the new database. Do it before clearing the browser.
Is the prototype wasted? No. It shows exactly what the app should do and look like. That’s usually about a third of the work of building it.
